CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING: This repair involves working inside the dryer with electrical components and high-temperature surfaces. Always unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet before beginning work to prevent electrical shock and accidental motor startup. If uncomfortable with this repair, hire a qualified technician.TOOLS REQUIRED: Phillips screwdriver, flathead screwdriver, nut driver or socket set (typically 1/4-inch or 5/16-inch), flashlight, work gloves, towels for cleaning, belt routing diagram (if available).IMPORTANT: This belt is 89-1/2 inches long with 4 ribs and 3 grooves. Verify your dryer model uses this belt length and rib configuration before ordering.

  1. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet to ensure complete power disconnection. CRITICAL: Never work on the dryer while it's plugged in.
  2. Remove all items from the dryer drum and lint trap.
  3. Move the dryer away from the wall to provide working space and access to the rear panel (if necessary).
  4. Allow the dryer to cool completely if it has been used recently. The drum and internal components reach high temperatures (up to 180°F) and require at least 30-60 minutes to cool to safe handling temperatures.
  5. Remove the lint trap and lint trap housing (if accessible from the front) to provide access to the drum area.
  6. Remove the front panel or access cover of the dryer. Most GE dryers have a removable front panel secured with screws or clips. Consult your dryer's manual for specific removal instructions.
  7. Take multiple photos of the belt routing, idler pulley position, motor pulley location, and drum assembly before disassembly. CRITICAL: Belt routing must be exact for proper reassembly and dryer operation.
  8. Locate the idler pulley inside the dryer. The idler pulley is typically mounted on a spring-loaded arm that maintains belt tension. It's usually located near the drum, typically on the lower left or right side.
  9. Locate the motor pulley (typically 2-3 inches in diameter) on the motor shaft. The motor is usually located at the bottom or rear of the dryer.
  10. Locate the drum and identify the belt path around it. The belt wraps approximately 270-300 degrees around the drum, typically on the underside.
  11. Take detailed close-up photos of: belt routing around drum, idler pulley position and spring attachment, motor pulley position, belt path under idler pulley, and any belt guides or clips.
  12. Release the idler pulley tension by pushing the idler pulley arm inward or releasing the spring (varies by model). This removes tension from the belt, allowing it to be removed.
  13. Remove the old belt by carefully pulling it off the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley. Caution: The belt may be hot or have sharp edges—handle carefully.
  14. Inspect the old belt for damage indicators: visible cracks or fraying (wear), hardened or brittle rubber (thermal degradation), thinned areas (wear from friction), broken ribs (mechanical damage), or discoloration (overheating). This confirms the diagnosis.
  15. Inspect the idler pulley for wear: the pulley should spin freely when rotated by hand. If it doesn't spin, is cracked, or has a flat spot, it should be replaced. A worn idler pulley causes rapid belt wear and slippage.
  16. Inspect the motor pulley for wear: the pulley grooves should be smooth and uniform. If grooves are worn, cracked, or have flat spots, the pulley should be replaced.
  17. Inspect the drum rollers or felt seal (if accessible) for wear or damage. Worn rollers cause the drum to rub on the housing, damaging the new belt.
  18. Clean the belt path inside the dryer, removing lint, debris, and dust. Use a flashlight to inspect for lint buildup around the drum and pulleys.
  19. Unpack the new WW02F00854 belt from its packaging.
  20. Compare the new belt to the old one to verify length (89-1/2 inches), rib configuration (4 ribs, 3 grooves), width, and overall design match.
  21. Inspect the new belt for any shipping damage before installation. The belt should be flexible with no cracks, fraying, or damage.
  22. Route the new belt around the drum, following your detailed photos exactly. The belt typically wraps under the drum, with approximately 270-300 degrees of contact.
  23. Position the belt under the idler pulley, ensuring it sits properly in the pulley grooves.
  24. Position the belt on the motor pulley, ensuring it sits properly in the pulley grooves.
  25. Verify the belt is properly routed by checking against your detailed photos. The belt path should match the old belt exactly.
  26. Release the idler pulley tension (if it was held) to allow the spring-loaded arm to engage and tension the belt. The idler pulley should apply firm pressure to the belt.
  27. Verify proper belt tension by attempting to move the belt with your finger at the point of maximum span (typically on top of the drum). The belt should move approximately 1/2 inch with moderate finger pressure. If it moves more than 1 inch, tension is too loose. If it doesn't move at all, tension is too tight.
  28. Rotate the drum by hand to verify the belt drives smoothly without slipping. The drum should rotate freely with consistent resistance.
  29. Reinstall any belt guides or clips that were removed during disassembly.
  30. Reinstall the front panel or access cover by positioning it and securing with screws or clips.
  31. Reinstall the lint trap and lint trap housing.
  32. Restore electrical power by plugging in the dryer.
  33. Run a test cycle to verify proper belt operation:Set the dryer to air dry or low heat for 5-10 minutesListen for smooth, quiet operation—should not hear squealing, squeaking, or grindingFeel the dryer exterior for excessive heat or vibrationAfter 5 minutes, stop the dryer and check if the drum rotated (open door and verify drum position changed)
  34. Listen for any unusual sounds during the test cycle—squealing (belt slipping), squeaking (worn pulley), or grinding (drum rubbing) indicate problems.
  35. Check for proper drum rotation by stopping the dryer mid-cycle and manually rotating the drum. Should rotate smoothly with consistent resistance.
  36. Run a full drying cycle with a small load of damp towels to verify proper operation over an extended period.
  37. Monitor for proper performance during the full cycle: consistent drum rotation, no unusual sounds, no burning smell, and proper heat generation.
  38. If the dryer operates smoothly with quiet operation, consistent drum rotation, and proper drying performance, the repair is complete.

Safety Notes: Always unplug the dryer before working inside. Allow adequate cooling time before beginning work. Handle the old belt carefully—may have sharp edges. Verify belt routing matches your detailed photos exactly. Check idler pulley and motor pulley for wear—may need replacement if damaged. Test operation thoroughly before considering the repair complete. This repair requires moderate mechanical skills and typically takes 45-75 minutes for DIY.

Belt routing is critical — get it right or the belt will slip off. The belt wraps around the drum (ribbed side touching drum), then goes UNDER the idler pulley, then around the motor pulley. Think of it as a zigzag pattern. If routed incorrectly, the belt will slip off or the drum will spin the wrong direction. When installing, make sure the belt is centered on the drum — if it rides too far forward or back, it can slip off during operation. While you have the dryer open, inspect the idler pulley for wear (it should spin freely without wobbling) and the drum slides/glides (they should be smooth, not worn through). These components often wear out around the same time as the belt. If the old belt broke due to a seized idler pulley or worn drum slides, replacing just the belt won't fix the underlying problem — the new belt will fail quickly too.

The drum belt wraps around the outside of the dryer drum and connects to the motor pulley and idler pulley — it's the mechanical link that transfers motor power into drum rotation. Over time, constant heat cycling and friction cause the belt to stretch, crack, fray, or snap entirely. A broken belt means the motor runs silently while the drum sits still; a slipping belt produces the characteristic squealing or squeaking sound during a cycle.

✓ Common Symptoms Fixed

This belt directly resolves: dryer runs but drum doesn't spin or tumble, motor hums but no drum movement, squealing or squeaking noise during operation, thumping or slapping sound from inside the cabinet, dryer won't start (some models have a door switch tied to belt tension), and visible broken or frayed belt found during inspection.

✓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my dryer belt is broken? Open the dryer door and try to spin the drum by hand — if it spins freely with no resistance, the belt is broken. You may also hear the motor running during a cycle with no drum movement. See our full guide: Dryer Won't Tumble – Drum Not Spinning Fix.

Is the XPart belt the same size as the OEM belt? Yes — the XPart WW02F00854XP is manufactured to the same 89-1/2" x 1/4" specification as the OEM WW02F00854. It is a direct drop-in replacement with no modifications required.

Does this belt fit both gas and electric GE dryers? Yes, the WW02F00854 fits both gas and electric GE, Hotpoint, and Haier dryers that use the 89-1/2" belt. Always verify your model number before ordering.

What other parts should I replace at the same time? When replacing the drive belt, it's a good time to inspect the idler pulley and drum support rollers — these parts wear together and are accessible during the same repair. Contact us for a parts recommendation for your specific model.

My dryer is squealing — is it the belt? Very likely. A glazed or worn belt slips against the drum and produces a high-pitched squeal before it snaps. See our full guide: Dryer Making Squealing or Squeaking Noise – Fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my GE dryer motor run but the drum doesn't spin?

This is the classic symptom of a broken drum belt. The belt wraps around the outside of the drum and connects to the motor pulley — it's what transfers the motor's rotation to spin the drum. When the belt breaks (from age, heat, or wear), the motor runs normally but has no way to turn the drum. You'll hear the motor humming, but the drum sits still and clothes don't tumble. Open the dryer cabinet and look for a broken or missing belt around the drum. If the belt is snapped, cracked, or completely gone, replacing it with a new belt restores normal operation. It's one of the most common and easiest dryer repairs.
